Bodrum - A bustling historic harbour; timeless gentle countryside

Bodrum reflects two contrasting lifestyles; the sophistication and energy of the town and the lesser known villages of the rural hinterland both moving at their own pace, and each with their own charm. Together they create the perfect holiday environment.

Bodrum is dominated by the magnificent Castle of St Peter which overlooks two horseshoe-shaped bays, both lined with a superb choice of restaurants, cafés, bars and excellent shops. From the busy harbour side elegant gülets set off to the islands and turquoise waters of this glorious coastline. Yet just behind this busy waterfront are quiet back streets of the old town with its authentic hamam (Turkish bath). Bodrum is also home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the ruined Mausoleum of Halicarnassus.

Whereas the town of Bodrum is quite well-known, the hinterland surrounding the working village of Bitez is a well kept secret. Winding lanes, overhung with fig trees and oleander, dry stone walls and lush green citrus groves all combine to create an old-fashioned rural landscape. There are bright poppies in hedgerows and indigo morning glory cascades over old houses.
A short drive from the village takes you to the popular beach at Bitez, a haven for water sports enthusiasts. There is also a good selection of restaurants, bars and cafés.

The charming fishing village of Bargylia is set on an inlet on the gulf of Gulluk just a 30 minute drive north of Bodrum. Bargylia has remained unspoilt and is known for some excellent fish restaurants. Ancient remains including a Roman temple, columns and walls can be found scattered around dating back to when Bargylia was an important port. This is also a fascinating area for bird lovers: the area around Bargylia has been declared a bird sanctuary and it is not uncommon to glimpse flamingos on the inlet.

For those who enjoy going off the beaten track, then a drive to Mazi and her stunning beaches will satisfy adventure lovers. Equally as stunning, but closer to Bodrum, Yaliciftlik beach offers a great day out for the family.

The capital of this region is Milas which provides the perfect antidote to the heat of the coast, with lovely old Ottoman houses and a colourful market on Tuesdays.

This versatile location is a  perfect choice for couples and families alike.
